It is no secret that the UK’s IT talent pool is much too shallow. Young people in the UK have a real love of technology, but there is often little connection with how this technology is made. As a result, there is a significant shortage of IT and digital skills within the UK workforce; something which is limiting businesses’ ability to innovate and grow.
To help address this long-term need for world-class digital talent, TCS has launched an internship programme in partnership with the British Council. They are offering UK graduates the opportunity to live and work for TCS in India for a year, and kick start their career through a paid internship that will combine practical training with work on digital projects for TCS clients.
The programme will see 1,000 UK graduates spend a year working in India between now and 2020. The scheme has been created as part of the British Council’s Generation UK-India programme, which seeks to foster business and cultural relations between the UK and India.
Applications for the first wave of internships are currently open so TCS are looking for UK-based students who love technology, and want to experience different cultures, to apply by the end of March.
Building an IT talent pool for the long-term
The TCS internships programme is designed to help address the shortage of UK IT talent by equipping a generation of UK graduates with the necessary digital skills (and understanding of India) to excel in today’s fast-paced global economy.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to acquire a wide range of IT skills, including software development, global consulting, business process management or human resources. They will take part in a 12 month internship and receive training in the technical and commercial skills needed for a career in this field, as well as get the opportunity to participate in client projects. The selected UK grads will be able to build these skills while learning about Indian culture, living in a new city and working one of the leading global digital businesses.
India: the ideal location
India is a great destination for ambitious young people. Today, it is the world’s fastest growing economy, with growth rates of more than 7% outpacing China and the rest of the developed world. In November last year, David Cameron stated that “India invests more in the UK than in the rest of the EU combined creating almost 8,000 new jobs here last year.” As one of India’s biggest businesses, TCS is playing a key role in growing the relationship between India and the UK.
Successful applicants will have the opportunity to acquire highly sought-after skills in an incredibly diverse, vibrant country with a fantastic culture. They will need to be able to travel to India from mid-August 2016 for 12 months and will be based in one of nine major cities in India, with the opportunity to travel around the country as well.
By the end of the 12 month internship, participants will have gained invaluable digital and business skills, as well as experience living overseas and working for a major multi-national corporation. This will greatly enhance employability prospects in the UK and elsewhere in the world.
There may also be the option to stay with TCS beyond the initial 12 month period, subject to performance. TCS is currently creating 500 jobs annually in the UK and often has 200 or more vacancies open at any one time; such is the shortage of IT and digital skills across Britain.
