Lord Browne

Lord Browne is a Partner and Managing Director of Riverstone Holdings LLC, an investment firm specialising in the energy sector. From 1995 to 2007 he was Group Chief Executive of BP plc. He has degrees from Cambridge University in the UK and Stanford University in the US. He is the UK Government’s Lead Non-Executive Board Member and Chairman of the Trustees of Tate. Education was a central theme of his Presidency of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2006-2011) and Lord Browne also chaired the Independent Review of Higher Education Funding and Student Finance for the UK Government in 2010.

He was knighted in 1998 and made a life peer in 2001. His memoirs, Beyond Business, were published 2010.
Sir Paul Nurse

Sir Paul Nurse is President of the Royal Society and Director and CEO of the Francis Crick Institute in London. A geneticist and cell biologist, he is best known for his world-leading research into cyclin-dependent protein kinases and how they regulate cell reproduction.

Nurse served as Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK and was President of Rockefeller University. He shared the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and has received the Albert Lasker Award and the Royal Society's Royal and Copley Medals. He was knighted in 1999 and received the Legion d'honneur in 2003.
Sir John Parker

Sir John Parker is Chairman of Anglo American and President of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

He studied naval architecture and mechanical engineering at the College of Technology and Queens University, Belfast and joined the ship design team at Harland & Wolff in 1964. From 1983 to 93 he was their Chairman and Chief Executive, leading the company’s turnaround and transfer from public to private sector. In 1993 Parker joined Babcock International plc as CEO, becoming Chairman of National Grid Transco in 2002. He was appointed Chairman of National Grid plc 2002 – 11. He was knighted in 2001.
Mala Gaonkar

Mala Gaonkar is Managing Director of investment firm Lone Pine Capital LLC, a role she has held since 1998. After graduating in economics at Harvard in 1991, she worked for The Boston Consulting Group, primarily in Munich and Hong Kong. Having completed her MBA at Harvard Business School, Gaonkar worked for Chase Capital Partners in New York, researching investments in internet and technology companies.

Gaonkar is a Founders’ Council member at Harvard University South Asia Initiative, a Trustee of Artangel, a member of the board of The Paris Review Foundation, an Advisory Board member of the Clinton Climate Initiative and a Trustee of Tate.
Sir John Beddington

Sir John Beddington was appointed as Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) in January 2008. Prior to this, he was Professor of Applied Population Biology at Imperial College, researching the application of biological and economic analysis to problems of natural resource management.

Beddington has advised UK Government departments including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the Cabinet Office. He has also counselled the Australian, New Zealand and US Governments, the European Commission, the United Nations Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Sir John Beddington was knighted in 2010.
Anji Hunter

Anji Hunter joined the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2011, as Director of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.

Prior to that she was Group Head of Government and Social Affairs at Anglo American plc, responsible for overseeing the relations with the communities and governments where the company operates.

She worked for Prime Minister Tony Blair MP from 1987 to 2002, in opposition and government, becoming Head of Government Relations in Downing St (1997), where she was the key liaison with the Cabinet, Civil Service, the Labour Party, Opposition Leaders, other Governments, and key media, business, and NGO figures.

In 2002, Anji moved to the private sector as Group Director of Communications at BP. She was responsible for advertising; Group publications, internal communications and liaison with opinion formers, media and investors.
Professor Sir William Wakeham
Chair of Search Group
The Search Group consists of prominent engineers around the world who are engaging with the international engineering community to find excellent nominations. Professor Sir William Wakeham is Chair of the group and is leading this search for global nominations. He is also currently Senior Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a visiting professor at Imperial College London, amongst other roles. He has won a number of international awards for his contributions to research in transport processes.
