Formula 1 is arguably the most glamorous example of automotive engineering. The sheer number of engineers that are involved in this multibillion-dollar industry is astounding. Engineering capabilities and advancements are the defining factor in who wins the championship. Formula student UK is an international motorsport design competition run by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Students must design, build, test and race their cars while finding time to raise sponsorship to keep them afloat. This culminates in a UK event at Silverstone where Business, Cost, Design and Race events take place.

The event gives students complete freedom to innovate within the remit of the competition which has lead to the development of electric cars, aero packages, carbon fibre bodies and even motors housed within the wheel itself! In my time so far with Cardiff Racing, I have seen 3D printing, metalwork manufacturing, business application, general assembly and computational manufacturing and aerodynamic design processes and I am only a second year! We've also gone to countless schools and events to show that engineering really is exciting. If you have ever wanted to be part of a race team and watch a car you’ve built go from 0-60mph in 3 seconds, I urge you to sign up straight away!
