Awarded every two years, the QEPrize celebrates the greatest achievements of modern engineering. Your unique trophy will capture the spirit of engineering, so get designing!

A panel of expert judges will select the winning trophy design before it is 3D printed into the finished trophy.

Entries for Create the Trophy closed on 4 January 2017, and the winning design will be announced alongside the winner of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering on 1 February 2017.

The Create the Trophy competition gives you the chance to put your creative skills to the test and design the next trophy for the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.

The winning entrant will receive a laptop and a trip to London to see your design being awarded to the next winner(s) of the QEPrize.

The competition is open to anyone around the world aged between 14 and 24 (subject to rules and conditions.

Rules and conditions of entry

  • General
    • The Create the Trophy competition (the “Competition”) is organised by The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering Foundation, whose registered address is at 3 Carlton House Terrace London SW1Y 5DG (the “Foundation”) and is administered by the organisers of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering Foundation (“organisers”).
    • The Competition is not a lottery and will be judged by an independent judging panel established solely for the purposes of judging the Competition (the “Judging Panel”).
    • By entering the Competition, candidates will be deemed to have accepted and agreed to be bound by these Rules and Conditions.

These competition rules are governed by UK law and may be void where prohibited by a law.

 

  • Qualifying candidates
    • Entry to the Competition is open to:
      • all persons worldwide who are between the ages of 14 and 24 on the 1 January 2017; and
      • who are not employees of, or related to employees of, the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering Foundation or the Royal Academy of Engineering.
    • The Prize
      • The winning candidate will be awarded:
        • a new laptop computer, a 3D printed replica of their Create the Trophy design and a trip to London for the presentation of the trophy to the QEPrize winner(s) in 2017. No cash alternative is available.

Where applicable, the prizes will be delivered to the winner’s home address.

Reasonable travel expenses in relation to attending the presentation event will be reimbursed to the winner subject to the provision of valid receipts. International travel will be covered for the winning candidate including standard airfare and accommodation on dates decided between the winner and the organisers for one person (plus parent or guardian if the winner is under the age of 18 at the time of the prize giving ceremony).  The organisation and cost of visas and travel insurance (if applicable) are not included.

  • the right to have his or her design used to create the trophy for the QEPrize.
  • Start and closing date
    • Entries will be accepted from 17.00 GMT on 7 OCTOBER 2016. The CLOSING DATE for receipt of ENTRIES is 12.00 GMT on 4 JANUARY 2017.
    • All entries must be received by the closing date to be considered for selection to win the Competition. The organisers accept no responsibility for entries lost, corrupted, or delayed in submission.
  • Entry conditions
    • To enter the competition, candidates must submit their designs using the QEPrize Create the Trophy app that can be downloaded via GooglePlay or the Apple AppStore. No other alternative designs (e.g. hand drawn designs or designs using different programs/applications) will be considered.
    • Download of the Create the Trophy app and design entry/submission are free.

Email confirmation of each trophy design submission will be sent to entrants if their design has entered the next stage. It is recommended you keep this confirmation in case it is later required.

  • Each entry must be the work of one individual. No joint or team entries will be accepted.

There is no restriction on the number of entries per candidate.

  • All entries must be original, created by the person who submits the entry and must not use or incorporate the work of any third party.
  • Candidates will be required to confirm their age and home residency before the shortlist is confirmed.
  • Candidates are responsible for ensuring that all requested information is provided at the time of entry. Incomplete entries will not be considered.
  • By entering the Competition, candidates warrant that all information submitted to the Trustees is true, current and complete. The organisers reserve the right to verify the eligibility of all entrants.
  • By entering the Competition, candidates agree to comply with the organisers’ reasonable instructions and requirements in connection thereto and supply any such additional information as the organisers may require for verification purposes.
  • If at any time the organisers become aware that a candidate’s work in connection with their entry infringes, or is alleged to infringe, the proprietary rights of a third party (in the organisers’ sole opinion, acting reasonably), then such work may be excluded from the Competition at the organisers’ sole discretion and no further correspondence will be entered into by the organisers in connection with the same. The same shall apply even after the judging process has finished.
  • The organisers reserve the right to reject and remove from the QEPrize website any entries that the Trustees, in their sole discretion, consider to be inappropriate.
  • The organisers reserve the right to amend the criteria and these Rules and Conditions and/or cancel the Competition at their sole discretion.
  • Publicity and further activities
    • By entering the Competition, candidates commit to:
      • the use of their name, image, reputation and the content of their entry for those publicity purposes connected with the Competition and the QEPrize as the organisers shall reasonably require (including, but not limited to, the candidate appearing in photography, film and print media and participating in interviews); and
      • complying with the Trustees’ reasonable instructions in relation to such publicity activities from time to time.
    • Selection process
      • A selection of entries will be shortlisted for final consideration. Candidates whose entries are shortlisted will be contacted in writing (by email) and will be required to provide evidence of age and residency.
      • Final judging will take place in January 2017. The organisers reserve the right to alter the date of the final judging day.
      • The organisers would like to notify unsuccessful candidates, however this may not always be possible.
    • Announcement of the winning entry
      • The winning entry will be selected by the Judging Panel on the judging day and the winning candidate notified by email.
      • It is the entrant’s responsibility to provide a valid email address and to monitor emails.
    • Claiming the prize
      • If the prize is not claimed within 10 days of selection, the winner will be replaced by the runner up and the same process followed.
      • The shortlisted entries and the winning entry will be announced and displayed on the QEPrize website.
      • All candidates are deemed to accept that decisions of the Judging Panel are final in connection with the Competition and the Judging Panel shall have absolute discretion as to whether an entry is to be shortlisted to win or selected to win the Competition from the shortlist.
      • No correspondence or feedback will be entered into with candidates relating to the opinions or decisions of the Judging Panel or the Trustees in relation to the Competition.
    • Intellectual Property
      • By submitting an entry each candidate:
        • warrants that: (i) he or she is the original author of the entry; (ii) he or she has not used the work of any third party in the creation of the entry; and (iii) the entry does not infringe the proprietary rights of any third party;
        • assigns (by way of current and future assignment) to the Foundation all copyright and all rights in the nature of copyright or other intellectual property rights in his or her entry;
        • irrevocably, unconditionally and without limitation waives all his or her moral rights under or pursuant to Part I Ch IV Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, or otherwise and under any similar laws in force from time to time;

10.1.4          consents to the use by the Foundation of his or her entry in any manner or form the Foundation thinks fit in relation to creating the trophy for the QEPrize; and

10.1.5          agrees to the Foundation adapting his or her entry as it thinks fit without seeking the candidate’s prior consent.

  • Liability
    • Each candidate shall be responsible in full for the content of his or her entry and the organisers disclaim any liabilities in respect of such content.
    • Given that the Foundation is a charitable company, in submitting an entry for the Competition, candidates agree fully to indemnify the organisers, the Judging Panel, the Foundation, its employees (and all other connected persons) in respect of all actions, claims, costs, damages, demands, expenses, fines, liabilities, losses, penalties, sanctions, amounts paid in settlement, out of pocket expenses, interest, penalties, and all legal and other professional costs and expenses that may be incurred by any of them in respect of any claims that the content of the entry infringes the proprietary rights of a third party.
  • Data Protection
    • Any personal information provided by candidates on the online entry form will be collected, stored and processed by the Foundation for the sole purpose of managing entries to the Competition and contacting shortlisted candidates and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
    • Candidates’ personal information will not be used for any purpose other than as set out in these Rules and Conditions unless permission is separately given by candidates.
