Stephen Maughan
Chemical & process

Stephen is a systems engineer and currently doing a PhD in optical microscopy at the University of Oxford and Rutherford Appleton Laboratories. His work revolves around developing new microscopes to better understand the dynamics of proteins inside bacteria, which is key to finding new targets for antibiotics. Prior to this, he spent three years at Malvern PanAlytical working on instruments to measure the size and mass of nanoparticles. Stephen became an engineer because he loves solving problems using science and technology, and enjoys working with partners across academia, industry and government to do so. Stephen is also an Institution of Engineering and Technology volunteer and regularly judges engineering competitions for young people, particularly in the North East of England.
