Wilbur Liao

I knew I wanted to focus on flowers, particularly their spiral shapes and the striking symmetry they possess. Nature, especially flowers, offers endless inspiration for me, with so many aspects being both beautiful and captivating, making it a perfect starting point. I also wanted my design to capture themes inherent to engineering—constant progress, and the idea that engineering is always advancing and building upon itself.​

This led me to realise how closely art, mathematics, and natural patterns intersect, which reminded me of the Menger sponge. After a few iterations, I created a trophy that blends the beauty of flowers, the concept of the Menger sponge, and a representation of the ever-evolving nature of engineering.​
