My inspiration stemmed from an historic Cider Press in the Dartington Cider Press Centre, Dartington, Devon. I ended up researching similar designs until I finally arrived at the 1800s fruit presses on which I based drafts and by extension my final design. I settled on this design as I believe gears show the simple nature of more complex ideas in engineering. Gears have been used throughout the history of engineering to efficiently apply moments as force multipliers in order to gain the desired effect, such as the propulsion of a bicycle or in my specific example the extraction of juice.
